Our group Molecular Membrane and Organelle Biology combines a variety of techniques to elucidate mechanisms by which cellular organelles are being shaped and how their specific shape is maintained. The more we learn about organelles and their functions, the more we understand that function and shape or appearance of organelles are tightly intertwined. In order to overcome the major bottleneck of deciphering this function/shape relationship, new techniques need to be developed and applied. We are focusing on in vitro reconstitutions of proteins and cellular machines that are involved in generating and/or maintaining membrane shapes.
